There is Shakespeare in Antioch and it seems to be pretty well attended.

And it combines high school students, college students, and professional actors in the production– what a great opportunity.

I went with the Kates last night to see Taming of the Shrew.

The location is wonderful, enchanted, at night (El Campanil, down by the river). And, as I said, quite a good turn out.

I would like to see the City Council quietly support such things and help them grow, rather than turning their attention to grand money making schemes which always seem to involve the angry destruction of existing people and places.

Instead, they might notice a wonderful new effort like this, and nurture it. How about encouraging businesses downtown to be open after performances on summer evenings (I’m speaking of coffee and tea shops– what’s a night out at the theater without a chance to drink an espresso afterwards and discuss the performance?)

How about making just a little local Shakespeare festival as a next step, publicizing what’s already here and adding another venue or two…

Imagine how magical it would have been to see “Midsummer Night’s Dream” in the City Park, before it was defaced by the
hideous new McPlayStructure? But maybe we could do it out on the Marina, or at the shipyard?

You don’t need to obliterate what exists in order to have something new take hold. Often you just need to enjoy it and encourage it…
