aiii que lastima

September 29, 2007

Excuse my broken Spanish in the extremity of my emotion, but as I detoured to the post office this morning on my way to return a library book, I found they were bulldozing Tijuana Mike’s.

I spent many friendly hours there, especially with Richard, who liked it a lot. He hasn’t come out here for a while, so I haven’t been there recently. I heard—well after the fact—that there had been a bad fire, but I didn’t realize, till I walked past the pile of smoking rubble today, that it was never coming back.

I once boycotted them for months because they charged me four dollars for a lukewarm glass of terrible red wine! But how sorry I am to see them go: the warm places, the welcoming places, are few and far between.
