it’s a secret

November 17, 2007

Whoever you are, I know you’re not reading this, but if you were, I would tell you not to miss the boat parade during the Antioch Christmas celebration. I think it’s on December 1 this year.

The regular parade is usually pathetic, and the attractions they have with it are pretty lame, unless you’re a little kid. But the boat parade is the best-kept secret of the year; it’s quiet and magical and the loveliest start to the Christmas season that you can imagine. And of course, it’s free.

I saw a similar event one year at Jack London Square; it was really fun, and beautiful as well, but Jack London Square is lit up and lively at night, so the boats there were just a part of the general night life and Christmas decorations. In Antioch the river is dark and silent, and the boats come downstream from the bridge all sparkly and bright and other-worldly, and you know Santa Claus must be right behind…
