into the west

the lady washington at rest in the san joaquin river

Here is the Lady Washington at the Marina, at sunset. I had several other wonderful pictures of her from the previous afternoon (how could you miss?)– with a fisherman, with the tules– but later it occurred to me that the light would be especially beautiful in the evening. I think I actually waited a bit too long, but it was one of those rare afternoons when the water is like glass. She is a lovely thing.

While I took pictures, Melania grilled a sailor on the dock. The other ship, the Hawaiian Chieftan (they usually come together) was up in Sacramento for a month. Apparently the channel is not deep enough for the Lady Washington to make it up there too; seems surprising when you see the size of the modern ships that go by, not that I know anything about ships, obviously.

Anyhow, she went back into the west, eventually; the day after I took this, she was headed for Sausalito.
