The boat parade is the most beautiful thing in Antioch.

And they do come out of the east, down by the bridge. Silently, until they get very close– then you realize that many of them are playing music and reveling. We watched from the Riverview pier this year, so it was less mysterious and more friendly. We were close enough to shout back and forth.

There’s hardly a better place for a boat parade anywhere. The river is so dark, and the boats are so bright. They’re always lovely, but people really outdid themselves this year.

The picture is a fake; I made it out of individual shots my brother-in-law took on his iPhone. There were more boats, and the order is totally random. You should see the real thing. If you can get to it next year, don’t miss it.
