say it with flowers

almond blossom

I never really meant for this to become a photo blog entirely– it started out with no photos at all. Still, sometimes the words aren’t there; sometimes even the thoughts aren’t there.

It’s back to rain and wind this week, and I don’t know how the tree blossoms will fare. Too much at the wrong time can really damage them. But I was able to catch some on the path last week, during the springlike days. They remind me of the beautiful orchards that used to surround us. These trees are not like those– they’re strange old tangly things which grow any way they want. Most of them are probably volunteers. We brought back some of the almonds last year and tasted them. They were deadly bitter but incredibly aromatic, so perhaps that is just their variety. At any rate, they’re not concerned with feeding humans. They live for their own purposes.

Simply gorgeous. The only signs of spring here are Canadian geese flying south, the recent appearance of robins in the backyard, and skunks mating.

There’s nothing like flowering trees– they’re so delicate and ephemeral.

SKUNKS MATING? How do you even know that?
